New Approaches in Radiation Treatment
Generally, radiation oncology concentrates radiation on cancer cells, shrinking and often eradicating them. Each treatment ensures the best dose is precisely focused on cancer cells, sparing normal tissue. Your treatment will reflect a specialized plan designed just for you. Radiation therapy, in all of its varied forms, remains highly successful in treating many kinds of cancer.

Hi-Art TomoTherapy®
New Hi-Art TomoTherapy® provides 3-D imaging at the time of the radiation treatment. The result is clarity and laser-precise delivery of needed radiation with unparalleled sparing of normal tissue. And that translates to more effective cancer care, particularly for complex and challenging cases.

Hyperthermia
Mercy, through NROC, has harnessed heat to fight cancer here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Now, for certain types of cancer at the skin’s surface or slightly below, the BSD Medical Hyperthermia system can apply therapeutic heat directly to tumors. This increases blood flow and raises oxygen levels in tumors so that the cancer can be more effectively treated by radiation therapy.

Liquid Radiation
The Northeast Radiation Oncology Center in Dunmore is the site of the area’s first Zevalin® “liquid radiation” procedure – a new cancer treatment designed specifically for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) patients. The Zevalin therapeutic regimen is appropriate for patients with NHL that do not respond to conventional therapy – or for lymphoma that returns after initially responding to therapy.

Bone Pain Therapy
Quadramet® therapy is a precisely targeted cancer treatment that delivers radioisotopes directly to cancerous cells in the bone, destroying the cancer and relieving the pain associated with the disease.

NROC at Mercy Hospital in Scranton and in Dunmore are the only facilities in Northeastern Pennsylvania licensed to administer these stringently regulated Zevalin and Quadramet treatments.

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy, or Chemo, as it is commonly called, is the science of treating cancer with drugs that target problem cells and destroy them. Chemo can be administered either on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
